1st May 2010 – Clydach CC.

Maesteg select a strong first team with some key players still unavailable due to work commitments, football and rugby. There is also a late change in the captaincy with Martin Wilkshire taking over the position from last years captain Jonny Davies. Good luck Martin. Young Ashley Colston makes his second first team appearance and Chris Parry has also returned to the club from Margam CC. Great news that Jonny Hood is available with Afon Lido AFC not having a game this weekend.
Clydach CC is a excellent cricket club with a strong tradition. They finished mid table last season in division two with win's over Aberdare and Cowbridge. It is wonderful that Maesteg CC is back playing against club's like Clydach CC. The umpires are Denis Harman and Peter Williams. Don't forget the start is at 1:30pm.
The seconds are captained for the first time by Dean Cox with experienced support available from Ian Washbourne last years captain. The team is complete with a mixture of experience and youth.

Match results:
First Eleven:

New captain Martin Wilkshire started the season by winning the toss and electing to bowl and chase. Clydach who are a strong and well balanced side batted well and finished their innings on a total of 175 all out. S. Jenkins 61 and D. Kreischerk 39 were the stars of the innings for Clydach. Martin Wilkshire bowled exceptionally well and had 5 wickets for 46 runs. Other's who had wickets were Jonny Davies 2 for 28 and Leighton O'Connor 2 for 34.
Unfortunaly Maesteg were unable to chase the runs and fell 62 runs short with only Luke O'Connor occupying the crease for any length of time for his 30. Good bowling from D. Kreischer 5 for 39 and C. Dunne 3 for 34 caused the low par performance.
Other first team results:
Landore beat B.F.Town by 78 runs.
Cowbridge beat Skewen by 70 runs.
Morriston beat Pontardawe by 5 wickets

Second Eleven:

Maesteg won by 2 wickets.
Clydach batted first and set a target of 172 for 9 and Maesteg chased the runs with two wickets remaining. An excellent start to the season with some fine individual performances.

8th May 2010 -  Skewen CC.
Maesteg introduce Michael Bailey into the first team after excelling consistanly for the second eleven and also welcome back regular opening bat Lloyd Wilkshire. It is important that Maesteg bounce back after their disapointing performance last week.
Skewen are always strong at home and a very difficult side to beat.
First team: Martin Wilkshire (Captain), Geraint Jones, Lloyd Wilkshire, Leighton O'Connor, Luke O'Connor, Ashley Colston, Andrew King, Ryan Parry, Chris Parry, Jonny Davies and Michael Bailey.
Second team: Dean Cox (Captain), Michael Lambert, Arron Unsworth, Gareth Bailey, Ian Washbourne, James Washbourne, Andrew Maynard, Shaun Taylor, Thomas Thornton, Jack Lewis and Stefan Roberts.

Match results:
First Eleven:

Winning draw.
Captain Martin Wilkshire last the toss on a green damp wicket and was asked to bat by Skewen.
Some strong determined batting by Luke O’Connor (61) set the stage for Christopher Parry (47) and Jonny Davies (41no) to bat both with confidence and strength to complete the innings with a good total of 206 for 6 after 44 over’s due to a small break in play because of rain.
David Thomas and David Jenkins both took two wickets for Skewen.
Jonny Davies (2 for 34) and Michael Bailey (2 for 27) both bowled well early on in the Skewen innings to restrict the score and take key wickets. Luke O’Connor (3 for 32) and Martin Wilkshire (1 for 28) restricted Skewen’s total to 154 for 9. Only P. Williams (41) and D. Rees (33) made any large contribution to the total.
Other contributions to this much improved performance were made by Club Chairman Geraint Jones who after a calf injury to Leighton O’Connor had to take his wicket keeping gloves off and bowl 9 over’s. Geraint’s spell was STRAIGHT and accurate. Leighton put the gloves on and took two catches and a stumping. Fourteen year old Ashley Colston is enjoying his experience in the first team and will be very soon making a massive contribution. He was joined for the last 10 over’s on the field by his dad Phillip who fielded for the injured Lloyd Wilkshire. Phillip must have impressed Ashley by some outstanding stop’s. Andrew King also excelled with some fine out fielding. One of the highlight’s of the day was made by last years hero Ryan Parry who flew like John Travolta to take a wonderful catch in the slip‘s. Man of the match Luke O’Connor competed his day with an outstanding run out. This performance was a lot better than last weeks. Spirit was excellent against a strong Skewen team. Another massive hurdle next week against a strong Pontardawe team

Second Eleven:
Lost by 10 wickets. Information to be provided.

15th May 2010 - Pontardawe CC.
Two changes in the first team for Saturday against a strong Pontardawe side. This seasons second team captain Dean Cox makes his first appearance of the season for the first team. The experienced Jeff Watkin is back in the team after missing last week's game in Skewen due to work commitment's. Luke O'Connor is missing this week because of work commitment's. A strong second team is selected with a good mixture of talent and experience. Great to see Liam Lewis returning from Margam CC.
First team: M. Wilkshire (Captain), L. Wilkshire, G. Jones, D. Cox, J. Watkin, C. Parry, R. Parry, J. Davies, A. King, M. Bailey and L. O'Connor.
Umpires: Trevor Jones and David White.

First Eleven:

Lost by 176 runs.
The day started well with Captain Martin Wilkshire electing to bowl first and chase.
Michael Bailey bowled exceptionally well early on in the Pontardawe innings for his 2 for 32....then the bowling was taken apart, firstly by the elegant Jason Davies (55) who is one of the best batsman in this division and Christopher Keen who showed some magnificant hitting in his incredible 112. Some of the striking was frightening not only for the bowler but for the club chairman who was slowly running out of match balls. At one stage people were getting worried for the safety of the town hall clock. An outstanding innings. Maesteg slowly got back into the game with some straight bowling from Geraint Jones (3 for 19) and Jeff Watkin (1 for 21).
When Maesteg batted only Jeff Watkins got into double figures scoring 33 of the 74. Pontardawe bowlers Stuart Miller (5 for 28) and Craig Howells (2 for 31) stood out. To cap a fine man of the match performance Chris Keen held on to three brilliant catches at cover point - What a day.
The first team travel to Cowbridge CC next week with the aim of kick starting the season.

The seconds after an excellent performance away in Pontardawe welcome back Michael Bailey who is having a fitness test on Friday because of a shin problem.
First team: Martin Wilkshire (Captain), Luke O'Connor, Leighton O'Connor, Lloyd Wilkshire, Andrew King, Jonny Davies, Jonny Hood, Geraint Jones, Chris Parry, Liam Lewis and Jeff Watkin.
Please meet at the cricket club at 11:30am.

Second team: Dean Cox (Captain), Michael Lambert, Martin Hood, Ian Washbourne, Gareth Bailey, Michael Bailey, Jeff Mathews, Andrew Maynard, Shaun Taylor, James Washbourne and Richard Howells. Reserves: Aaron Unsworth, Nicholas Dixon, Callum Walters, Steffan Roberts - Rest of squad.
Please note that there is a cup match on Sunday. Could you inform Martin Wilkshire of your availability.

First Eleven:

Again captain Martin Wilkshire won the toss but this time elected to bat first. Openers Andrew King and Lloyd Wilkshire started well and made 43 runs off 14 overs before eventually King was caught for 35. Wilkshire went on to make 30. Other contributers were Jeff Watkins 35 and at the end of the 50 overs innings Liam Lewis (20no) and Leighton O'Connor (17no) had a partnership of 30 runs to take the final innings score to a respectable 159 for 7. Some bad news with number four batman Christopher Parry having to retire with a nasty hand injury.
The Cowbridge innings started badly with the loss of their captain Thomas Merilant for 5 to Liam Lewis caught behind by Jonny Hood but Lloyd and Carney steared the ship to 80 for 1 to bring them back into the game. Luke O'Connor then bowled well for figures of 15 overs 6 maidens 4 wickets for 17 runs. An excellent spell of spin bowling. He was supported wonderfully well by Martin Milkshire who also gained two key wickets. Jonny Davies finished with figures of 1 for 31, Liam Lewis 1 for 18 and Leighton O'Connor 1 for 9. Chris Parry very bravely fielded one handed and there was some outstanding fielding by Geraint Jones and special catching from Liam Lewis and Jeff Watkin. This was a far better performance against the top of the table side and was what the first team needed.

Second Eleven:
Cowbridge CC won the toss and elected to bat. Maesteg bowled exceptionally well with Shaun Taylor (15 overs, 3 for 45) being the pick of the bowlers. The experienced Gareth Bailey and Ian Washbourne also excelling. Ian especially with his swing bowling. Wicketkeeper Michael Lambert was outstanding behind the stump's and Captain Dean Cox had his whole team worked tirelessly to keep a strong Cowbridge side down to 159 for 7.
A man of the match batting performance by Gareth Bailey (62) set the stage for Jeff Mathews and Martin Hood to bring the team home on the 48th over. 162 for 6. A great win.
The second team has a good balance of experience and youth and are slowly climbing up the league. The next couple of week's are vitally important for their league position.

Two very good performance from the two senior team's this week.
Next week we go to battle with our old friends Briton Ferry Town CC.

29th May 2010 - Briton Ferry Town CC.

First team - HOME: Martin Wilkshire (Captain), Jonny Hood, Luke O'Connor, Leighton O'Connor, Ryan Parry, Andrew King, Jonny Davies, Jeffrey Watkin, Liam Lewis, Geraint Jones and Lloyd Ham.
Please meet at club at 12:00pm.
Second team- AWAY: Dean Cox (Captain), Michael Lambert, Ashley Colston, Michael Bailey, Gareth Bailey, Ian Washbourne, Jeffrey Mathews, Andrew Maynard, Michael Hood, Callum Walters and James Washbourne. Replacements: Thomas Thornton, Richard Howells, Auron Unsworth, Steff Roberts - Rest of squad.

Please note that the same first team has been selected for Sunday's cup match vs. Llangenych - Away.

Big weekend for both sides - Ryan Parry last year's player of the year returns after his injured shoulder but unfortunately his brother Christopher misses out due to a hand injury. Chris should be available in two or three week's time. It is also good to see Lloyd Ham playing his first game of the season for Maesteg CC after playing his cricket in Aberdare CC for the last couple of seasons - Good luck Lloyd - Enjoy.
Lloyd Wilkshire is unavailable due to work commitment's.
In the seconds Skipper Dean Cox has Ashley Colston and Callum Walters back from their holidays. Two young cricketers with a great future in the sport.

19th June 2010 - Llanelli CC.

Against a strong cricketing club. The first team go down to Stradey Park. A great sporting place.
Nicholas Dixon comes into the first team for his first appearance of the season.

First Eleven:

Llanelli CC batted first and scored 118 all out after some exceptional bowling from Jonny Davies 15 over 5 maidens 4 for 30 and Luke O'Connor 15 overs 5 maidens 3 for 24. They were supported by Lloyd Ham 1 for 37, Martin Wilkshire 1 for 13 and Leighton O'Connor 1 for 5.

Maesteg made hard work on reaching the total with only Luke O'Connor 30 and Martin Wilkshire 21 making any mark on the score. In the end Nicholas Dixon 11 not out batting at number 9 got Maesteg through the winning line.
Well fought match - great spirit - good result.

Mumbles batted first and scored 88 all out. Jonny Davies 2 for 23, Martin Wilkshire 5 for 8 of 6.4 overs and Luke O'Connor 2 for 25.
Maesteg reached the total with the loss of 5 wickets. Luke O'Connor 10, Jeff Watkins 33 not out and Martin Wilkshire 21 not out. An excellent result against a classy side.

26th June 2010 - Llandore CC.

First Eleven:

Maesteg CC climbed to fifth spot in division two of the Anthur Insurance South Wales Cricket Association after this emphatic seven wicket win at Locks Lane.
After winning the toss, Landore skipper Paul Rees must have regretted his decision to bat first as his side lost two wickets in the first two overs with no runs on the scoreboard.
That included dangerman Paul Rees who went first ball after a great catch by Nicholas Dixon. Landore found themselves in deeper trouble at 5 for 5 with opening bowler Jonny Davies (4 for 41 off 15 over) and Lloyd Ham (2 for 20 off 8 overs) ripped the heart out of the Llandore batting.
Some resistance came later with a good partnership of 79 by Swansea City goal keeping coach Tony Pennock (42) and Rico Pasquanito (29) which repaired some damage.
However Luke O'Connor (2 for 22) and skipper Martin Wilkshire (2 for 26) mopped up the tail and the Landore innings closed on 124 all out.
Maesteg made a solid start with O'Connor (24) and Lloyd Wilskhire (12) putting on 36 before O'Connor was caught off the bowling of Paul Sidberry (2 for 34) and Wilkshire soon after was trapped lbw.
That brought to the crease Andrew King and Ryan Parry who made a match winning partnership of 87 before Parry departed for 40 with only three runs needed to win and King was still there at the end on 44 not out.

Second Eleven:

3rd July 2010 - Clydach CC.

First Eleven:

An outstanding game of cricket with the wrong result for Maesteg CC. If Clydach CC gain promotion this season they will certainly say that this was the one that the should have lost !
Maesteg batted first and posted a score of 208 all out. The main batsman was Jonny Hood with a wonderful 77 which included some big 6's. The total was set up after losing an early wicket by a solid stand by Luke O'Connor (36) and Andrew King (34). These two key players have provided good performances all year. 208 all out a useful score but was it enough on a hard track and fast outfield.
At the start of Clydach's innings Maesteg gained an early wicket with the debutant Shaun Taylor (1 for 25) bowling captain Dean Kreischner. James Garland then came in and took some control of the innings by getting a strong 49. With some excellent bowling from Martin Wilkshire (2 for 40 off 15 overs), Luke O'Connor (3 for 32) and Maesteg's man of the match Jonny Hood (3 for 18) Maesteg were well in control with the score on 133 for 9 after 33 overs.
Then Steve Crane batted like never been seen before and smashed 65 not out to win the game.
With a big crowd enjoying the game and the pressure building "Crane" with the help of the number 11 batsman won the game with a wonderful man of the match performance.
Crane lifted Clydach with a magnificent innings.
Maesteg were very disappointed after getting in a winning position and losing. A game which they should have won quite easily at one stage but in the end well done Clydach CC.

Extract from the Western Mail - 5th July 2010:
Clydach CC got their division two championship challenge back on track after two shock defeats but they only scraped home in extraordinary fashion against Maesteg CC.
They had a last wicket stand of 76 believed to be a record to guide them home by a wicket and amazingly the undefeated batsman were Steve Crane on 65 and Matthew Vaughan on just 2.
Maesteg had batted first and were all out for 208 with Jonny Hood hitting 73. Clydach captain Dean Kreischner took 3 for 42 and Matthew Vaughan 2 for 16.
Clydach appeared to be heading for their third successive defeat when they were 133 for 9 but then Crane and Vaughan came together to save the day.

James Washbourne is unavailable due to a prior commitment but a strong team of youth and experience is selected.

First Eleven:

Maesteg without Skipper Martin Wilkshire and star alrounder Jonny Davies due to injury, knew that they would be in a big game. Skewen and Maesteg have always had very competative matches over the past years. Both clubs have mutual respect for each other.
Maesteg won the toss and asked Skewen to bat Jorden Jones (41) and A. Roger's (26) set the standard early. The innings ended on 133 all out with Leighton O'Connor leading the way with figures of 5 for 35. He was well supported by Michael Bailey (2 for 35), Luke O'Connor (2 for 26) and Lloyd Ham (1 for 31). There was also some fine ground fielding and some excellent catching.
Maesteg then started their innings in style with Luke O'Connor (31) and Lloyd Wilkshire (28) setting the standard. Unfortunately Maesteg then lost 3 quick wickets but the ever reliable Ryan Parry (34 not out) together with Jonny Hood (30 not out) came to the front and took Maesteg through the winning post for a much needed win after recent issues. Spirit was good - cricket was quality and a clinical victory in the end.
